News season 2024: More steps towards sustainability
A question that you often ask us is what we do during the winter months when the aparthotel is closed.
It might seem that, once we close the doors in the month of October, everything comes to a standstill and there is nothing more to do until the following season, but nothing could be further from the truth.
At the Royal Son Bou, the winter months are a period of intense activity, which is very important to improve your experience as guests and keep us updated in a sector of constant change.
In this article we are going to inform you about what we have been working on during the winter. We will also tell you what things will continue for another season, based on the experience you have shared with us and your comments.
Sustainability measures
Our sustainability measures are integrated into the daily operations of all the departments that make up the hotel. As you know, our mission has always been to be a reference in Menorca as a sustainable hotel. This summer we will have the following new features:
- The aprons that our waiters will wear will be 100% recycled from textile waste from the tourism sector (for example sheets). So we become pioneers in joining the circular economy of hotel textiles. With this measure we save up to 110,600 liters of water that would have been necessary to manufacture the new aprons. (Source Delight Wear).
- We change the bibs that we offer you in restaurants for other compostable ones. The new bibs comply with the European standard for sustainable packaging UNE-EN 13432:2001.
- We eliminated single-use ice cream tubs and replaced them with reusable tubs to reduce waste generation and once again comply with the circular economy.
- We will use 100% CO2 neutral toilet paper with 0% plastic in all apartment bathrooms and common areas. It is also a product line that is committed to eliminating plastic in all its packaging.
- We continue working on replacing diesel boilers with aerothermal solutions to advance our energy transition and eliminate dependence on the use of fossil fuels.
- We will install a second water fountain next to block C to continue stopping the generation of single-use plastic packaging derived from current water consumption and promote reuse. An option that makes us more sustainable.
- We will install new windows and balcony doors in 36 more apartments in the hotel, specifically on stairs D1 and D2 (pool) and D5-D8 (Kikoland) with double glazing to improve energy efficiency.
- We have decided to eliminate tablecloths in the La Basílica restaurant, which will mean significant savings in water and chemical products. With this measure, we reduce our impact on our environment and protect Menorca as a biosphere reserve.
Food & Beverage
- This summer at Los Olivos restaurant we will offer you a themed sushi table that we hope you will enjoy very much. We will continue with other favorite themed tables, such as the children's table with the delicious chocolate fountains, the Menorcan table, with a selection of the most representative dishes of the island or the roast table, which last year were among your favorites.
- We will include in the La Basílica restaurant the electronic labeling of the buffet dishes just as we have in Los Olivos. With this solution, we can update possible changes to the menu more quickly and save on paper and lamination of traditional labels. We believe that it is these small gestures of respect for our environment that can make a difference.
Furthermore:
- We have built a ramp next to block D (Kikoland) to improve accessibility to the apartments on stairs D8 and D7.
- We have installed Chromecast on all the hotel's TVs, so you can continue enjoying your favorite series and streaming platforms while you rest in the apartment.
- Following the suggestions you left us in the quality surveys, we have installed sockets on the nightstands in the master bedroom in blocks D and E.
- We will have a new show within our evening entertainment program. It will be entirely conceived and assembled by our fantastic animation team. It will be called Royal Funtastik Circus and we hope the whole family will enjoy it a lot.
- We will continue with our Royal Family Care program for which every year we award €5,000 to a social child protection project.
- We will continue collaborating with Unicef in the Friendly Hotels program. Last year you helped us donate €5,141.39 that will go towards facilitating access to drinking water for boys and girls in disadvantaged regions.
- We renewed the agreement with the Menorca Disabled Foundation for the incorporation of people with disabilities into the workforce and monitoring of them. With this initiative we want to comply with the General Law on the Rights of People with Disabilities and their Social Inclusion.
All these new features will come hand in hand with a very special anniversary for us, since this summer the Royal Son Bou Family Club turns no less than 35 years old.
And to celebrate, we are starting 2024 with the fabulous news of knowing we have won the Holidaycheck award, which places us as the second best hotel in Spain for families.
We are very excited about everything that awaits us this summer 2024 and we can't wait to share it with all of you.
