Royal Family Care Scholarship 2025: bringing smiles to hospitals together with Sonrisa Médica

At Royal Son Bou Family Club we believe that caring for families also means caring for the community around us. That is why, through our Royal Family Care program, we support initiatives that create a positive and lasting impact.

In 2025, the Royal Family Care Grant was awarded to Sonrisa Médica, a pioneering organization in Spain in the field of hospital clowning, whose mission is to humanize the hospital experience and provide emotional support to patients, families and healthcare professionals.

Since receiving the grant, their work has continued to fill hospitals with something as powerful as it is necessary: smiles in the most difficult moments.

When a smile changes the atmosphere of a hospital

Imagine a hospital corridor early in the morning. The atmosphere is calm, but filled with nerves, concern and long waiting times. Suddenly, a red nose appears, an improvised melody or a small magic trick.

The hospital clowns of Sonrisa Médica do not only aim to make people laugh. Their work goes much deeper. Each intervention begins with artistic and emotional preparation by the team: vocal and physical warm-up, simple makeup, character costume and a review of the logbook with information from the previous service.

Before coming into contact with patients, the artists receive information from healthcare staff about each case. This process, known as transmission, allows every performance to be adapted to the specific needs of the patient and helps reduce the anxiety, fear or stress that often accompany a hospital stay.

Music, magic and clowning to humanize the hospital experience

The interventions combine music, magic, juggling and humor, always in coordination with healthcare professionals. The goal is to shift the child’s attention away from the focus of illness and transform the hospital environment into a more human, welcoming and lively space.

The clowns visit different areas of the hospital, from pediatrics to maternity, rehabilitation or outpatient consultations, carrying out both group and individualized interventions depending on the needs of each unit.

The impact of the Royal Family Care Grant

Thanks to the support of the Royal Family Care Grant 2025, the program has reached hundreds of people in the hospital environment during its first months of activity.
Between November 2025 and January 27, 2026, Sonrisa Médica has supported:

  • 369 hospitalized children
  • 766 family members and companions
  • 1,682 adult patients
  • 1,323 healthcare professionals
  • 163 collaborations with medical teams

Behind every number there is a moment of relief, a necessary distraction or an unexpected laugh that helps people cope with difficult situations.
